Arthur L. Trester was born in 1878 in Pecksburg, 2.1 miles east. He was elected to the Board of Controls of the Indiana High School Athletic Association in 1911, appointed Permanent Secretary in 1913, and after 1929 continued as Commissioner of High School Athletics. Under Trester, the showcase of the Indiana High School Athletic Association became high school basketball, reflected in the term "Hoosier Hysteria," which is still used today. Widely referred to as the czar of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and high school athletics, he led an organization that excluded black and parochial schools until 1942, stating they were not public high schools because of exclusive enrollment. He died in 1944. The Trester Medal for Mental Attitude was first awarded in 1945, and he was inducted into the national Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961 and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1965.
