Pilot Peak is an 11,699-foot mountain in the Absaroka Range of northwestern Wyoming, in Park County near the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Easily seen from U.S. Route 212, the Beartooth Highway, it stands beside Index Peak and has been known by its present name since at least 1873, with federal adoption in 1937. Although prominent, it is seldom climbed because of its crumbly rock; the first documented ascent did not occur until 1932, when Robert McKenzie and Hollis Mees reached the summit. The mountain lies in a subarctic climate, and its runoff feeds tributaries of the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River.
