A monument dedicated in 1911 honors men of the community who participated in the nation's Civil War. Fought from 1861 to 1865 over fundamental ideas relating to the value of the human spirit, the war cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of men. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President, was commander of the Federal Army during this period and is remembered for his ideals, honesty, and humanitarianism. He spent his formative years in southern Indiana, about 250 miles south of here. In 1863, at the dedication of a Civil War battlefield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, a brief speech that expressed fundamental beliefs, honored those who gave their lives, called for renewed devotion to the unfinished work before the living, and declared that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
