Built in 1897 of native stone from Lost Creek Quarry on land of H.H. McConnell, a soldier at Fort Richardson and author of "Five Years a Cavalryman," this bank building was constructed by the local firm Risley Brothers and is noted for its outstanding architecture. First National Bank had opened on Dec. 10, 1890, in the courthouse. Its first president was Judge T.D. Sporer, and its longest-term president, J.W. Knox, served from 1893 to 1932. Management remained in the hands of descendants of the organizers.
