Bogue Chitto State Park, south of Franklinton along State Highway 25 in Louisiana, takes its name from the Choctaw phrase bok chito, or “big creek,” after the nearby river. Opened to the public on August 28, 2010, it spans 1,786 acres of small streams, cypress-tupelo swamps, and upland and bottomland hardwood forests. Among its notable natural features is Fricke’s Cave, a gorge with fragile sandstone formations. The park combines this varied landscape with extensive recreation and lodging, including cabins, RV sites, trails, fishing lakes, a canoe launch, and other facilities that make it a major outdoor destination.
