Mount Lincoln, an 8,383-foot Sierra Nevada peak near Donner Pass, stands at a crossroads of natural geography and human movement. Its slopes feed three major drainages, and the Pacific Crest Trail crosses its east side. The mountain is closely linked to passage through Donner Pass, where the California Trail used Roller Pass and where the Donner Party became trapped by snow in 1846 near Donner Lake. Its name also evokes Abraham Lincoln through his ties to James F. Reed and later through the transcontinental railroad and the Lincoln Highway. In the 20th century, it also became part of the region’s recreation and culture through filmmaking and skiing.
