Since 1872, the original mechanical clockworks at the center of the museum have kept time in Rome's most famous landmark, the Old Town Clock. The City Clock, as the tower is popularly known, contains a 250,000 gallon water tank that once served the residents of Rome. The restoration of the clockworks and the conversion of the water tank into a museum resulted from the joint efforts of the Rome Jaycees and the City of Rome.
