On May 18, 1864, Davis’ division of the 14th A.C. [US], moving from Resaca by way of the west bank of the Oostanaula, forced a passage of the river against Confederate opposition and captured Rome. Davis’ seizure of Rome was part of a movement east toward Kingston upon the flank of Johnston’s forces [CS] retreating from Resaca, but after the military situation changed by May 23, the Davis column was diverted to Dallas in support of McPherson’s troops on that front. Davis’ division left Rome for Dallas in Paulding County on May 24 by way of State Highway 101, camping that night at Peek’s Spring in Aragon, Polk County.
