Viles Arboretum in Augusta, Maine, is a two hundred twenty-four-acre botanical garden and arboretum with about five miles of trails through gardens and forest. Open year round without charge, it preserves more than three hundred species or varieties of trees and shrubs while serving as a place for day hiking and bird watching. Its forested section is a certified Tree Farm Demonstration Area featuring many of Maine’s native trees. Notable areas include the Urban and Community Forestry Demonstration Area, Governors Grove with eastern white pines honoring Maine governors, collections of conifers and chestnuts, and themed gardens devoted to lilacs, hostas, native plants, and historically used flowers, herbs, and shrubs.
