On Dec. 19, 1814, the Orleans Militia repulsed a British landing from H.M.S. Newcastle that was intent on burning the village and vessels during the War of 1812. This was the town's early commercial and maritime center, known as Packet's Landing, where passengers and freight moved between here, Plymouth, Boston, Salem, Maine, and the Maritimes.
