Built in 1891 in Orleans, Massachusetts, this telegraph station became by 1898 the terminus of Le Direct, a transatlantic cable running about 3,200 miles between North America and Europe. As part of Cape Cod’s submarine cable network, it connected Orleans to the global communications system at a time when undersea messages moved far faster than ships. Its history was shaped by international events: after France fell to Nazi Germany in 1940, the U.S. federal government assumed control for security reasons, returning it in 1952. Operations ended in 1959, and local residents preserved the building in 1972, when it was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
