Little Dog Mountain is an 8,610-foot peak in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park, Montana, standing on the Continental Divide and plainly visible from Marias Pass, a major Rocky Mountain crossing. Its name preserves a local historical link: George Bird Grinnell named the mountain for Little Dog, a Blackfoot chief who in 1853 told Isaac Stevens, the new governor of Washington Territory, about the existence of Marias Pass. The peak is therefore connected not only to Glacier’s landscape but also to the history of travel and exploration through the pass below.
