The Great Wall of Los Angeles is a half-mile-long mural on the history of California from prehistory to the 1950s and remains a work in progress. It stands as a landmark to the history of America and California and as a monument to interracial harmony among the youth who helped create it. Begun in 1976 by distinguished UCLA professor Judith F. Baca and the co-founder and artistic director of the Social and Public Art Resource Center, it employed more than 400 youth and their families from diverse social and economic backgrounds, who worked with artists, oral historians, ethnologists, scholars, and community members to determine its content. The Social and Public Art Resource Center, founded in 1976, creates public art to promote civic dialogue, foster cross-cultural understanding, and address critical social issues.
