Second-generation Hollanders, the ten Steunenberg children—six boys and four girls—spent their formative years in Knoxville, Iowa. In the late 1880s, A.K. Steunenberg, Albert Keppel Steunenberg, answered an advertisement for a printer and came to Caldwell. He then called for his brother Frank, also a printer, and the rest of the Steunenberg family followed. At one time, the Steunenberg migration helped inspire some thirty-two families to move to Caldwell. A.K. and Frank became successful newspapermen, bankers, farmers, and reclamationists, and under the Carey Act the family was instrumental in initiating the Twin Falls Tract and the Boise Project. Frank later became governor of Idaho and served two terms from 1897 to 1901. He was assassinated by a gate bomb at his home on 16th and Dearborn on December 30, 1905. The brothers were very close, and A.K. died just fifteen months later on March 16, 1907. The Steunenberg family’s pioneering influence lingers modestly in Caldwell to this day.
