Drum Barracks served as officers’ quarters from 1862 to 1868 and as a supply depot for the Department of the Southwest of the U.S. Army. The building was recognized for the importance of its association with early American history in California, and during the Civil War period it was identified as Drum Barracks and later declared Historic Cultural Monument No. 21 by the Cultural Heritage Board, Municipal Art Department, City of Los Angeles.
