The Powder Magazine, built in 1862 as part of the Drum Barracks military post, measured 16 by 14 feet and had walls three feet thick. During the Civil War it was used to store wooden kegs of gunpowder, and it was built of brick, mortar, and stone quarried locally on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
