The Ernest Kinney Teamster Family Mural portrays the working history of eastern Sierra teamsters and packers through scenes of logging, freight hauling, and mining supply. One panel shows the Kinneys and Summers hauling logs at Mono Mills between about 1850 and 1910, using big-wheeled timber rigs and large flatbed wagons to move heavy loads of lumber bound largely for Bodie, Aurora, and Bridgeport. It also traces the Summers family’s arrival in Bridgeport in 1850, the Summers and McGees driving the first cattle into Owens Valley from the Visalia area by way of Walker Pass in the spring of 1861, Sam Bishop following that route in August 1861, the Summers and McGees continuing to Monoville and Aurora, and the Summers and Kinneys settling on Round Valley Ranch in the late 1860s, with Kinney family members including Ernest and his wife Yan still living in Bishop. A second panel centers on freight work around 1904 and 1905, showing a twenty-two-animal long-line team of horses and mules pulling machinery over Sand Canyon to Power Plant #3 on Bishop Creek, with pushers helping control immense wagon loads in hills, curves, and heavy sand; some loads used thirty-two animals in front and four pushers behind to move thirty-two tons, and the orange generator part shown weighed about twenty tons and remained in use. It also shows how a muleskinner guided such teams by a single jerk line and jockey bar, and notes that Spray Kinney was driving long-line teams at age twelve. A third panel depicts sixteen pack mules at the Champion Spark Plug Mine making two trips a day under two packers, carrying ore and mining equipment in loads that often exceeded 600 pounds by means of heavy leather aparejos fitted to each mule. This scene includes the packers John Bachoch, a Native American, and Torres, and notes that packers and mules worked year-round, that blinds were used on difficult mules for safety and handling, and that descendants of John Bacoch still live in Big Pine in Owens Valley.
