Promised Land State Park is a high-elevation, roughly 3,000-acre park in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, centered on Promised Land Lake and Lower Lake and surrounded largely by Delaware State Forest. Once part of Lenape hunting grounds, the area later passed through Shaker ownership to lumbering interests, and its forests were repeatedly clear-cut before Pennsylvania acquired the land in 1902. Restoration began under state foresters, and the park opened in 1905 as Pennsylvania’s fourth state park. Civilian Conservation Corps work during the Great Depression shaped much of its roads, trails, and facilities, while its glacial terrain, bogs, forests, wildlife, and year-round recreation have made it an enduringly popular destination.
