Tobyhanna State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania spans 5,440 acres, including Tobyhanna Lake and part of Tobyhanna Creek, and is known both for outdoor recreation and an unusual military and industrial past. Part of the land came from a former artillery training range tied to the predecessor of Tobyhanna Army Depot, and unexploded shells have still been found in remote areas. Along the park’s western edge, a rail line once owned by Jay Gould reflects the region’s railroad and tannery connections. Today the park centers on boating, camping, hiking, winter sports, hunting, and forested lakeside recreation.
