Hamilton-Sleight Post of the Grand Army of the Republic dedicated this memorial in 1923 to the memory of their comrades in the Civil War, 1861–1865, and invoked Abraham Lincoln’s words: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; but it can never forget what they did here.”
