Barn Complex

1
The barn complex consists of three barns and additions assembled over about eighty years. The first barn, an embankment barn facing south, was constructed shortly before the house was built in 1844, with a traditional hay loft on the west side, a threshing or wagon floor on the east, and two stalls below for work animals. The second construction was the northern portion of the east barn, which housed animals below and tools above, and the little sleigh shed was added about the same time. The third and largest barn was likely built sometime after 1860 to house the milk cows that Erastus Dudley was breeding, and the early dairy he established housed eight cows. Some evidence suggests that the large barn may have been shortened during construction or perhaps even moved because of its unusual structure and framing dimensions. In 1926 the dairy was expanded to the south with a shed addition for more cows, and the east barn was lengthened to include a granary.
