Macoupin County "Cannonball Jail"
History
6
Built in 1869 and used for 118 years, Macoupin County's "Cannonball Jail" is one of the few Cannonball Jails still in existence. Surplus Civil War cannonballs were placed within the walls to prevent prisoner breakouts. A Route 66 garden was designed and planted by local volunteers.
