DeTour Reef Light stands offshore in northern Lake Huron, south of DeTour Village, marking the entrance to DeTour Passage on a major Great Lakes route long used by commercial freighters and recreational boaters. Built on hazardous DeTour Reef, it warns vessels away from shallow water and helps guide traffic to and from Lake Superior, earning a reputation as that lake’s gateway. A shore light established in 1847 was replaced in 1931 by the present offshore tower, whose lighting equipment evolved over time with advances in lighthouse technology. Preserved after a major restoration, the light remains active, boat-accessible, and open to limited public visitation.
