Pipe Island Light, a privately owned lighthouse on Pipe Island in Michigan’s St. Marys River, was first lit in 1888 by the Lake Carriers Association to guide ships entering the river from Lake Huron. It reflects the long importance of this waterway to Great Lakes shipping. In 2005, three cottages and the Victorian keeper’s dwelling were opened for overnight stays, giving the historic light a continuing use beyond its original navigational purpose.
