During the 1960's, as the state faced tough financial times, officials proposed closing some of the less financially secure fairgrounds, including the Auburn District Fair. The community rallied around the fairgrounds with financial contributions and volunteer support. Because of that backing, Governor Reagan and his staff removed the Auburn District Fair from the closure list. On this site in 1970, Governor Ronald Reagan proclaimed that the Auburn District Fair was "the little fair that wouldn't die."
