The Eatonton Male and Female Academy was built on this site in 1889, and its school bell summoned students to class. Later called The Eatonton School, the academy was destroyed by fire in 1916, but the bell survived. In the 1950's, Principal Archie Swymer found it hidden away in storage and saved a piece of Eatonton history.
