Little Kennesaw Mountain, a sub-peak of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia, was part of the Confederate defensive line during the 1864 Atlanta campaign. As Union general William T. Sherman advanced toward Atlanta, Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston established trenches from Kennesaw Mountain to Kolb Farm to hinder that advance, and Confederates built Fort McBride on Little Kennesaw Mountain as part of the position. Though the mountain occupied an important place in the line, it saw only skirmishes, with heavier fighting farther south. Today it remains part of the preserved Kennesaw Mountain battlefield, where the terrain helps illuminate the campaign’s strategy and movement.
