Early St. Andrews pioneers Thomas and Piercy Gwaltney built this house before 1876 and raised nine children there. The house originally stood one block south of this site at the southwest corner of West Beach Drive and Calhoun Avenue. In 1912, the large two-story house was moved to this location using log rollers and oxen. By 1908, the Gwaltney family had purchased a large tract of land and created the Gwaltney Estate Plat. In 1915, the house became home to John T. and Myrta Maxon Gwaltney, and it remained a gathering place for relatives until Mrs. Myrta Gwaltney's death in 1963. Through marriage, the Gwaltneys were connected to many of Bay County's early families, including the Wares, Drummonds, Days, Porters, and Gainers. Its exterior still retains the simple early Victorian farmhouse style in which it was originally built.
