Auchville was founded on April 4, 1853, with Friedrich Schilling as supervisor, J. Friedrich Luckhard as clerk, and Jacob F. Ruehle as treasurer. The Indians had named the crooked river Sebewaing, and this name was given to the town in 1857. In 1953, the citizens of Sebewaing Township dedicated the centennial in memory of the founders of Auchville.
