Albert E. Sleeper State Park is a 723-acre public recreation area on Lake Huron near the tip of Michigan’s Thumb, combining a shoreline setting on Saginaw Bay with inland trails, camping, and other outdoor amenities. Established as a county park in 1925 and added to the Michigan state park system in 1927, it was renamed in 1944 for former governor Albert E. Sleeper, who had signed the legislation authorizing that system. Civilian Conservation Corps work in the 1940s, including construction of the Outdoor Center, tied the park to a broader era of public works, while its recreation and tourism have also made it economically important to the surrounding area.
