Abbeville County's Confederate monument was dedicated to the soldiers of Abbeville District and erected in 1906 by the Daughters of the Confederacy of Abbeville County, with a later monument erected in 1996 after the first was destroyed by fire in 1991. Its inscriptions connect Abbeville, South Carolina, to the Civil War through the first mass meeting for secession there on November 22, 1860, and the last cabinet meeting there on May 2, 1865, and include Confederate symbols, dates from 1861 to 1865, and verses honoring soldiers who wore the gray, fought beneath the Stainless Banner and Dixie's Bonnie Flag, and died with Lee. Additional inscriptions include 'Honor the Brave,' language praising truth and right, and a memorial note that the later monument was given in memory by William Henry Simpson for his beloved Abbeville.
