Fort Livingston stood on Grand Terre, two miles northeast, on land occupied by Jean Lafitte until 1814 and purchased by the U.S. from Etienne DeGruy in 1834. The fort was constructed in 1841 to defend Barataria Pass. The site never saw combat. It was abandoned after the War Between the States, and its guns were removed in 1872. It was named for Edward Livingston, U.S. Secretary of State from 1831 to 1833.
