At the southernmost tip of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island appears in eighteenth-century land grants. It was first part of Orleans Territory, but was often administered by Lafourche Parish, and has officially been part of Jefferson Parish since 1825. The island and nearby Chenier Caminada were devastated by hurricanes in 1856 and 1893. In the nineteenth century it was a haven for writers Kate Chopin and Lafcadio Hearn. It became a fishing community, a paradise for bird watchers and sportsmen, and the home of the International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, founded in 1928.
