Indian Mountain State Park, a 213-acre park west of Jellico at the base of Indian Mountain, occupies part of the Elk Valley floodplain, where Elk Creek, lakes, and ponds shape its marshy landscape. Established in 1971, it is especially significant as a reclaimed strip mine transformed into public recreation. The site reflects the coal history of the Jellico area, where mining expanded after coal discoveries in the 1880s and grew with the railroad until Campbell County became Tennessee's leading coal producer. After surface mining exhausted the land and the city acquired it in 1960, restoration created a park that preserves both recreation space and the region's industrial past.
