Jeptha Knob is a mountain-like rise in central Kentucky and the highest point in the Bluegrass region, standing about eight miles east of Shelbyville near Clay Village and rising roughly 300 feet above the surrounding farmland. Almost midway between Louisville and Lexington, it is often seen as a symbolic divide between their hinterlands. Though called a knob, it is not part of Kentucky’s Knobs Region. Its significance lies not just in its prominence but in its unusual origin: once regarded as a cryptovolcanic structure, it is now thought to have been created by an asteroid impact about 425 million years ago, supported by iridium-rich breccias.
