Squire Boone's Station, or Painted Stone, stood a half mile west on Clear Creek and was founded by Squire Boone and others in 1779. Born in Pennsylvania in 1744 and taken to North Carolina as a child, Squire Boone came to Kentucky with his brother Daniel in 1769. In the summer of 1775 he came here, then returned in the spring of 1776 and painted his name and the date on a creek stone that gave Painted Stone its name. He aided in the defense of Boonesboro in 1778, served as Captain of border militia stationed at Painted Stone Fort in 1780, was a Kentucky delegate to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1782, a member of the Kentucky Convention in 1785, and a delegate to Virginia's ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788. In 1813 Congress gave him standing as a Revolutionary soldier and officer. He moved to Indiana in 1806, built a new settlement there, and died and was buried there in 1815.
