St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod in Wittenberg, Missouri, occupied its second house of worship, dedicated to the glory of God on Advent Sunday, 1920. Wittenberg, named after Wittenberg in Germany, was one of seven settlements of the Saxon immigration to east Perry County in 1839. St. Paul’s congregation was organized in 1877 as a school-congregation of Trinity Church in Altenburg, and in 1903 it became an independent congregation. Because of declining membership and frequent flooding of the Mississippi River, the congregation dissolved and its brick church building was razed in 1987, after which the members joined sister congregations.
