On September 11, 2001, what began as an idyllic morning along the East Coast turned into the deadliest attacks ever on American soil when four airplanes were hijacked by Islamic extremists. American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 A.M., United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower at 9:03 A.M., American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon at 9:37 A.M., and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, 125 miles from Washington, D.C., at 10:03 A.M. as passengers stormed the cockpit. The South Tower collapsed at 9:59 A.M., the Pentagon's E ring collapsed at 10:15 A.M., the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 A.M., and 7 World Trade Center, a 47-story building, collapsed at 5:20 P.M. after emergency personnel had time to evacuate it, causing no injuries or deaths from that collapse. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including 343 FDNY firefighters who rushed to the scene in New York City and saved countless lives.
