The Kernville Veterans Memorial is dedicated to American prisoners of war and those missing in action and features Hardy Abbott’s “The Loneliest Prayer,” the official poem of the National Forget-Me-Not Association. In the poem, a captive isolated for more than ten years reflects on loneliness, suffering, faith, family, and country, mourns the lost years in which his children have grown and his wife has raised them alone, and wonders whether he is counted as a prisoner of war or missing in action.
