In 1897, county officials ordered the jail remodeled. The wood floor was replaced with cement, hammocks replaced straw bedding, and sewer lines, water closets, and wash basins were installed. The bunks were specified as four hammocks, twenty-eight inches wide, made of No. 4 Ducking, with three-eighths inch cord sewn into the edges and suspended side to side in the cage by heavy leather straps and buckles fastened to the lattice work or angle loops riveted to the cage sides. The water supply was to include a one-inch pipe connecting the tank with the wash basin and privy sink, with a brass cock for drinking water and flushing and a cut-off cock outside to regulate the flow. A patent privy sink with one seat was to be fitted in one corner of the cage and connected by a four-inch iron sewer pipe to the outside of the walls, with a foul air pipe to carry off gases and prevent their return from the sewer or cesspool to the jail privy. A cast iron wash basin near the privy sink was also to drain through an iron trap pipe leading to the privy without allowing gases from the privy to enter the wash sink.
