Located in the New River basin and bisecting portions of Raleigh and Fayette counties, Dunloup Creek historically was the focus of many efforts to establish crossings for pedestrians, railroads, and automobiles. In the 19th century, foot bridges, wooden train trestles, and stone bridges for carts and carriages dotted the landscape, connecting communities on either side of the watershed. During the 20th century, concrete became the material of choice for automobile crossings because it provided an affordable and durable alternative. Concrete arch bridges and later steel stringer bridges were built along Dunloup Creek, replacing earlier stone and wooden bridges and providing more permanent ways to cross the creek.
