San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park in north central Florida is notable for both ecological diversity and deep human history. Its broad hammock landscape includes hardwood forest, sandhill, hydric hammock, and swamp communities, with rare plants and abundant wildlife. The preserve contains 56 archaeological sites dating from the Paleo-Indian period 10,000 to 12,000 years ago through the 20th century, including the Spanish-era Mission San Francisco de Potano. Its name reflects the Seminole pronunciation of San Francisco. Evidence here also relates to Spanish land grants after 1790, the settlement of Spring Grove in the 1830s and 1840s, and the 1836 Battle of San Felasco Hammock during the Second Seminole War.
