Brayton Grist Mill, built around 1890 on Mashamoquet Brook in Pomfret, Connecticut, is one of the state's best-preserved 19th-century rural grist mills and the last survivor of several mills that once worked this stretch of brook. Built by William Brayton with salvaged materials from earlier mills on the site, it later passed to the state after his death and became part of an expanded state park. Its four-story post-and-beam structure preserves an unusually complete set of milling machinery, including a basement turbine, power-reducing gearing, and late-19th-century milling equipment. Restored and maintained by the Pomfret Historical Society, it now also serves as the Marcy Blacksmith Museum.
