On September 6, 1869, the shaft at the Avondale Mine near Plymouth, Pennsylvania, caught fire, blocking the only escape and killing 108 men and boys along with two rescuers. The disaster became the deadliest mining disaster in the anthracite coal industry. Victims of the September 1869 Avondale Mine disaster were buried within Washburn Street Cemetery, with additional victims laid to rest in nearby family plots.
