Omak Rock, or Balance Rock, is a glacial erratic on the Colville Indian Reservation near Omak Lake in Washington State, standing about 1,340 feet from the shoreline. Known for its precarious balancing position, it is both a notable geological feature and a place of cultural significance. The rock is closely associated with the 1872 North Cascades earthquake, which occurred nearby and which it survived, making it valuable for studies estimating the quake’s acceleration and intensity. Its survival has also led to suggestions that the earthquake’s epicenter may have been very near the site. For the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, it symbolizes nature’s perfection in the region.
