Quincy Quarries Reservation in Quincy, Massachusetts, preserves former granite quarries that became nationally significant when Solomon Willard selected Quincy granite in 1825 for the Bunker Hill Monument. To move the stone, Gridley Bryant designed and built the Granite Railway, chartered in 1826 and often credited as the first railroad in the United States, helping make stone cutting Quincy's leading industry for more than a century. After the last quarry closed in 1963, flooded pits drew climbers and cliff jumpers but became notorious for fatal accidents. Acquired as a reservation in 1985, the site was later reshaped into a safer public recreation area and historic industrial landscape.
