The Granite Railway incline formed part of the Granite Railway, conceived and built by Gridley Bryant despite great opposition and supported by Thomas Handasyd Perkins, to carry stone for the Bunker Hill Monument from the quarry to tidewater in the Neponset River, a distance of two and three quarters miles. Work began April 1, 1826, and the completed railway opened October 7, 1826.
