The A.H. Jones Company grew out of a Hastings carriage and wagon sales business established by the Jones brothers, Charles L. and Arthur W., about 1890. After that firm dissolved, Charles formed the C.L. Jones Company in the Enterprise Block at First and Burlington, one of the first firms to sell autos in Hastings. In 1907, his son A.H. Jones and E.A. Brandes purchased the firm and renamed it Jones and Brandes. In 1910 they shipped the first railcar load of autos into Hastings and established the first auto repair shop there, but the firm dissolved that fall and each partner started his own auto sales business. Established in 1910, the A.H. Jones Company sold Cadillac, Reo, and later Chrysler and Plymouth. Its garage, completed in April 1916, was described as one of the most beautiful and conveniently arranged buildings of its kind in the state, with a front of white glazed terra cotta, a back of enameled brick, and an elevator that moved autos to a basement used car showroom. The building was demolished in 1966 to make way for the City National Bank. A.H. Jones also served ten years as a director of the National Automobile Dealers Association, was a Hastings civic leader for many years, served thirty-two years on the Hastings College board of trustees, and was honored in 1952 when the college stadium, made possible by a Jones gift, was named for him; the First Presbyterian Church chapel, also dedicated that year, was a memorial to his parents.
