The Donnebrouge Mine retains its head frame while most of its other structures were destroyed over time. Extensive vertical shafts, or winzes, honeycomb the area, some reportedly as deep as 1700 feet, and these shafts were used to reach gold-bearing quartz. As a hard rock mine, its pay dirt was taken to a stamp mill, where the ore was crushed and gold was separated from the rock through an amalgamation process using mercury. The mine is said to have produced millions of dollars in gold ore during its lifetime, and after it was last mined in the 1950's, its shafts were flooded by water from the Yuba River.
