Sandy Creek Covered Bridge in Jefferson County, Missouri, is a rare surviving example of the state’s once more numerous covered bridges and one of only three remaining Howe truss bridges in Missouri. Built in 1872 during a county bridge-building program along Old Lemay Ferry Road, it was one of six bridges constructed that year on the route linking Hillsboro with St. Louis County. After high water destroyed it in 1886, it was rebuilt the same year using half of the original timbers and the original abutments. Protected by the state from 1967 onward and restored in 1984, it now serves pedestrian traffic.
